Mackay salute for 97th Anzac Day

MACKAY residents were out in full force to mark the 97th Anzac Day at services held throughout the region on Wednesday.

More than 6000 people of all ages attended the Mackay dawn and main ceremonies, which were held at the Cenotaph, Jubilee Park on Wellington St.

Mackay RSL sub-branch president George Newton said Wednesday's Mackay Anzac services were the highest attendance to date.

"I think (Anzac Day is) becoming more of a national symbol," Mr Newton said.

"It's not uncouth to be Australian and announce it."
