Mackay mum's guilt over alleged sexual abuse of daughter

A MOTHER has told of the ongoing guilt she feels from taking her former lover's word over her own daughter's about indecent exposure allegations.

It was not until years later that the mother learned her former boyfriend also allegedly sexually assaulted her young daughter.

A 39-year-old Mackay man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, is on trial in Brisbane Supreme Court after pleading not guilty to raping and supplying marijuana to his ex-girlfriend's daughter.

The man was in an on-again, off-again relationship with the victim's mother, whom he met in Mackay, between 2002 and 2008.

The victim's mother recalled, in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the moment she chose to believe the accused over her then 10-year-old daughter.

She said a teacher called her to her daughter's school - when they lived in Brisbane - in 2003 about a complaint her daughter had made.

The daughter had said her mother's partner walked into her bedroom earlier that morning naked.

When the mother told her boyfriend, he called the victim a liar.

"He said the (victim) was an f**king liar and as the conversation went on (he) became more irate and angry," the mother told the court.

"He was accusing her that she was lying because she didn't want us to be together."

The mother said her daughter became withdrawn and said "don't worry about it" and was later grounded.

In 2009, after the accused and the mother had separated, the victim told her mother she hated the accused.

"I went into her room and shut the door and saw...the hatred she had for (him) and said 'did he used to hurt you when I wasn't there?," the mother recalled.

"She didn't answer and just started sobbing. I cuddled her and that's when she said 'he used to touch me'."

Defence barrister Kevin Kelso submitted to the mother the victim made the complaint to the teacher in 2003 because she did not get her own way at home.

The mother denied that and said her daughter was scared and felt safe at school, which is why she told her teacher.

"I didn't believe her at the time and that is something I have to live with for the rest of my life - the guilt," she said.

The trial continues.
