Mackay Airport was evacuated with emergency services on scene after reports of a potential fire on Thursday afternoon.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman confirmed crews were called to the airport at 4.15pm and more crews were en route.

Airport users and staff were initially evacuated, but were allowed back inside about 4.50pm.

The spokesman said crews were still investigating the incident, with Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Police also called to the scene.

There are unconfirmed reports of smoke in the back of the airport’s communications room, with gas monitoring underway.

It is unclear whether flights will be impacted by the incident.
