Looting-accused no-show at court

SEVERAL people accused of looting during and after the floods that devastated parts of Ipswich were due to appear in court yesterday.

But a warrant was issued for the arrest of one of the defendants charged with looting after he failed to appear in court.

Arthur John Borchert, 37, faces a charge of stealing by looting at Ipswich on January 23 but failed to appear in Ipswich Magistrates Court for the first mention of the case by 1.05pm yesterday.

Magistrate Michael Quinn issued a warrant for Borchert’s arrest so police can apprehend him and bring him to court.

Scott Richard Buchanan, 34, appeared in court yesterday similarly charged with stealing by looting on January 23 at Ipswich.

Defence lawyer Amanda Robinson adjourned Buchanan’s case until March 9 so he can seek legal advice.

Ms Robinson also appeared for Shawn James Wyllie, 18, who is accused of string of burglaries in the Ipswich area before and during the floods.

Wyllie, who appeared in court wearing board shorts and a black T-shirt, is charged with break-ins in Ipswich on dates including December 29, January 2, January 11 and January 12.

Ms Robinson adjourned Wyllie’s case until March 9.
