'Mining has a place, just not here'

A MEETING outlining the dangers of allowing coal seam gas mining within the Lockyer Valley is set to go ahead next month.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones said the meeting, scheduled for November 9, was a chance for people to stand up and protect the Lockyer Valley.

"I would like to make this point perfectly clear, I am not against mining in any form, we need gas and we need coal but the Lockyer Valley isn't the place to do it," Cr Jones said.

"Mining has a place, just not here. The Lockyer Valley has the seventh most fertile soils on earth and we need to protect that valuable commodity.

"What we need is special legislation protecting the Lockyer Valley from mining of this type and if we all band together, we have a good chance."

The meeting will take place at a venue to be announced and will include distinguished key note speakers.
