Lobwein sets sights on serving sport

AS a competitive shooter, Ken Lobwein has represented Australia and won a prestigious Queens Prize title. He was a member of the Australian team that competed in South Africa in 1999.

The following year the Purga-based Lobwein won the Queens Prize shoot at Belmont, having represented Queensland 10 times.

"That's a great feeling," said Lobwein, who turns 61 next Friday.

However, it's been as an administrator that Lobwein has made his most valuable contribution to the sport.

He has been secretary of the Ipswich and District Rifle Club since 1989.

During his association with the club he has performed a range of tasks including organising club competitions and membership to being club statistician, target maker, canteen provider, chief range officer and club team coach.

Other duties as an executive committee member have included overseeing range maintenance, acting as ammunition steward and publicity officer.

"It's in my blood for a long time to get involved," said Lobwein who as a customer service manager for a construction company knows the importance of having an organisation run smoothly.

Lobwein admitted that the club's shooting range at South Ripley is his second home. However, he gained satisfaction from helping his sport cater for a broad spectrum of competitors from 14-year-olds to those still enjoying shooting challenges in their eighties.

"We're getting a good roll-up, good membership," he said. "It's not just me. It's a combined effort."
