Lismore man let child drive, Qld police confirm

A MAN arrested for letting his 7-year-old son drive through the Gold Coast is from Lismore, Queensland authorities have confirmed.

However, to protect the identity of the child involved in the incident, the man legally cannot be named.

Police allege the Lismore man was times the legal alcohol limit when he was arrested after being driven by his son, aged seven, son through the heart of Surfers Paradise last on Friday morning June 21.

Southport Magistrates Court confirmed the Lismore man had been arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and being an adult in charge of a vehicle under the influence of liquor over the incident.

The incident made national headlines on Friday and left many people wondering how any parent could let a child so young could drive a car on the road.

Queensland Police said the car came to the attention of officers when it was driving along The Esplanade, the busy beachside strip at Surfers Paradise without its headlights on.

When officers pulled over the car over at about 3am they found the 41-year-old man allegedly intoxicated in the passenger seat and his son behind the wheel.

Following a positive roadside breath test the man he was arrested and taken Surfers Paradise police station.

At the police station it is alleged the man recorded a high-range blood alcohol level of .205.

He will face Southport Magistrates Court on July 3 to answer charges over the incident.

Relatives who travelled to Queensland on Friday are caring for the man's son.
