AT least one person is dead and another seriously injured after a car crashed into two bus shelters in Marseille, French police say.

The suspected driver, a 35-year-old male, had been arrested afterwards.

According to reports police are unsure if the two incidents are accidents or terror-related.

French army are on the scene.

According to police the driver mounted the kerb in the Croix-Rouge region in the north of the city at around 8.15am local time, injuring one person.

About an hour later the same car crashed into a second bus shelter in Valentine arrondissement, killing one person. Reports say the victim was a 42-year-old woman.Police advised the public to avoid the Old Port area where the driver, a 35-year-old man, was arrested.

"At the moment we have no information on the motives of this individual," a police official told Reuters.

The incident comes just days after back-to-back van attacks in Barcelona and Spanish resort town of Cambrils killed 14 people.

France remains on high alert after a number of terror attacks in recent months.
