Heroin addict's lavish crime spree ends in jail

A LAVISH crime spree to spend a $300,000 burglary windfall has landed a heroin addict six years behind bars.

Matthew James Turner's lavish spending ended when a Sunshine Coast detective chased him down on the Nambour Connection Road at Woombye.

The then 23 year old dropped $20,000 cash for a silver Mazda RX-8 at a Brisbane car dealership and bought a $2500 men's watch.

He was caught with just $130,000 left and admitted he spent about half of the stolen money on his 3-4 times a day heroin addiction.

Turner confessed he broke into a woman's home in Deagon, in Brisbane's north, a week prior and stole $300,000 stashed in a bag in a wardrobe.

He pleaded guilty in Brisbane District Court on Wednesday for those offences and was told he would be eligible for parole in November.

He had already served 438 days in pre-sentence custody.

Turner had also racked up a $3000 debt in gift vouchers on a stolen credit card, broke into the Pizza Hut in Currimundi, a Subway store, a cafe and stole from the Amart All Sports.

He had a history of similar offending and had breached two parole orders with these latest offences.

Turner has failed one of three random urine tests in jail and been twice caught with cutdown syringes.

Turner told the court he was in jail with the same people he associated with outside.

He said he would make an immediate application to transfer to the Maryborough Correctional Centre to get away from those people and expected to move inside a month.

The court Tuner had poly substance abuse, an abuse-marred childhood and was associating with antisocial people.

Judge David Reid said Turner's actions would have caused significant hardship to the people he stole from.

He said Turner's parole would depend on his behaviour in jail and whether he could keep his addiction in check.
