What a tosser: Dolphin snapped playing with octopus

KRISTA Nicholson must have flipped out when she saw this dolphin playing with an octopus.

The PhD student snapped these remarkable shots on Sunday in waters off Mandurah in Western Australia.

"It's not unheard of for dolphins to do this, but it's not a regular occurrence," Ms Nicholson said of the mammal's fun in the sun pastime.

Ms Nicholson has been working on a research project that could lead to Australia adopting a marine mammal protection act.

Part of that is taking genetic samples from Mandurah's dolphins to see how closely they are related to other WA dolphins.
