Wacol siege: Ex-factory worker arrested as stand off ends

EARLIER: A former food plant worker has been arrested after a 10-hour stand-off with police in Brisbane.

Special Emergency Response Team officers rushed into the building just after 8am, and quickly located the man, who surrendered peacefully, silently and immediately when confronted.

The siege was over within 20 minutes of them entering the building -- which was roughly the size of two football fields.

Acting Inspector Janelle Andrews said the 46-year-old man was armed with a "large knife".

He entered the building at 10pm on Wednesday and is understood to have threatened his former workmates.

Police are yet to reveal the nature of those threats.

The building is now being combed by police.

Wacol siege at food plant now an 'emergency situation'

POLICE have declared an emergency situation at Wacol where an armed man is believed to be inside the Vesco food manufacturing plant armed with a knife.

Heavily armed police and response teams now surround the food processing factory.

The stand-off began at 10pm on Wednesday when the man entered the building, apparently threatened staff and refused to leave.

Inspector Sean Prior told 7News that negotiators were attempting to contact the man inside via the building's PA system.

"At this stage we've got additional resources being deployed to the area here.

"And we're trying to negotiate and get him to surrender and come out."

A declaration was made at 7.06am under the Public Safety Preservation Act and covers the area around the facility on Grindle Road.

The business is opposite the Brisbane Correctional Centre.

The man involved in the incident is believed to be alone.

He reportedly climbed on to a ceiling during the night but had come down early on Thursday morning.

Specialist police on the scene are asking people to avoid the area.

Police have also asked the media not to broadcast details of the movements of the tactical response team.

Negotiators have been attempting to talk the man out of the building for more than nine hours as of 8am Thursday.

Police say they were called to the building at 10pm on Wednesday after reports of a man making threats.

Negotiators are attempting to communicate with the man who is believed to be an ex-employee.

The business has been successfully evacuated and a cordon is currently in place in the area.
