Waterfall tragedy mum: "Kyle was my everything"

THE mother of the young man tragically taken at a Sunshine Coast waterfall has described her only child as her everything.

"We just had a fantastic mother-son relationship,'' Sue Baumann said of her 20-year-old son Kyle.

"He was my son but he he was my best friend.

"He was just everything.''

Mrs Baumann said her son was not a risk taker but had died in a 'freak' accident on Sunday at Kiamba, near Nambour, despite the heroic efforts of friends to save him.

His friends told Seven Local News that Kyle had lost his footing and was taken so quickly by the rapidly moving waters that they did not see him go.

But as soon as they noticed him gone they jumped into the waters to try to save him.

Rescuer James Still told Seven: "It was hard and it was scary.''

James dived into the white water to rescue Kyle, who was described as a 'gentle giant' at two metres tall.

Alex Clasby also tried to help.

Clearly still emotional after their ordeal, he admitted: "We could have lost two that day.''

Kyle's friends are grateful for those who stopped to help at the Image Flat Road waterhole which had become more dangerous after heavy rain.

They formed a human chain to retrieve Kyle.

"He knew he was loved right to the last second,'' one said.

Tributes have flown on Facebook pages with Kyle remembered as a big brother, for his wicked sense of humour and positive outlook on life.

A keen gamer, Kyle had recently done an IT course, and was about to get a job as a security guard.

"He was just a good person,'' his mother said.

"He had a heart of gold.''

A gofundme page has been set up to help the family pay funeral costs.

Already more than $3300 has been donated to the $5000 target.
