Back from the brink: Rudd takes ALP to 50-50 chance

THE return of Kevin Rudd to the Prime Minister's office has seen Labor stake a claim as a 50-50 chance in the upcoming federal election.

In the latest Newspoll, published on Tuesday, Labor fortunes returned, with both major parties sitting squarely on 50% each of the two-party preferred vote.

The poll shows a massive swing back to Mr Rudd as preferred Prime Minister, with voter satisfaction up seven points to 43% since last week.

Mr Rudd's personal popularity has been the key to the return to the party's wider fortunes, removing Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's previous 45% to 33% lead over Julia Gillard as preferred PM just two weeks ago.
