Keep kids busy these holidays

SCHOOL holidays can be quite a challenge for those parents who don't really want their children to spend days on end in front of a computer, television, or gaming console.

Not that there is any shortage of things to do to keep them busy.

They could tidy their rooms. They could clean out the cupboards. They could mow the lawn, wash the dog, help hang out the washing, and scrub toilets.

They won't want to do any of those things. They would much rather moan that they are bored, eat the fridge bare, and download funny stuff from You-Tube.

Still, you might as well try.

Give these ideas a whirl - you never know, they might just have fun.

Get cooking

Ask them to unleash their inner MasterChef and whip up dinner for the family that night.

Balloon volleyball

You're never too old or too cool to enjoy a game of balloon volleyball in the lounge room. Follow it up with a good old-fashioned pillow fight.

Make a movie

This is great fun - and could end up being the next big thing on YouTube.

Cardboard construction

Grab some cardboard, and create a rocket ship. Or a sky scraper. Or a beanstalk. And then the best part - knocking it down!

Camping

This is the one time the kids are allowed to pull everything out of the linen closet with your blessing. Turn the lounge room into a camping ground, turn off the electricity for the night, and tell spooky tales around a candle.

Finger painting - chalk drawing - colouring in

Sure, it sounds like baby sport, but try telling that to the next winner of the Archibald Prize.
