Kayaker spent a night lost

POLICE have found a 32-year-old man who went missing at Wivenhoe Dam during a kayaking trip.

The man went out on his four-metre kayak with his dog about 2pm Wednesday afternoon, and concerns were raised after he failed to return by sundown.

Initial reports suggested the man, who was not an experienced kayaker, had not carried enough gear for overnight weather conditions.

An initial search by family members failed to locate the man and police were called in.

Police and SES began searching at first light on Thursday and the man and his dog were spotted a short time later from the Rescue 500 chopper.

The kayaker was safe and well and did not require medical treatment.

Police said the man had been unable to find his way back to his starting point before nightfall and was forced to sit the night out after paddling to the nearest bank.
