Justice Department still seeking temporary Gatton courthouse

THE Queensland Government has turned down Lockyer Valley Regional Council's offer to use the Gatton Shire Hall as a temporary courthouse.

In the July 30 edition of the Gatton, Lockyer and Brisbane Valley Star, we reported council had given permission to the Department of Justice and the Attorney-General (DJAG) to use the court from September while the building was being renovated to accommodate the State Government One Stop Shop.

However Lockyer state MP Ian Rickuss said the department has turned down the Council's offer.

"The dates when the hall is available do not meet the Department's requirements," Mr Rickuss said.

Mr Rickuss said the department was currently investigating alternative suitable venues to maintain court in Gatton while the Court Registry was upgraded.

"The Department is seeking a venue for approximately three months (early October through December) with the potential to be available in January only if needed," he said.

"DJAG is working with the One-Stop Shop project team to deliver additional benefits to Lockyer Valley residents such as additional shelter from the weather for court users, a new courtroom fit-out providing a secure prisoner dock and bar table, witness stand, gallery and Magistrate's bench; courtroom technology upgrade including video conference, integrated teleconferencing etc and Infrared Hearing Assist for hearing impaired court users."

The One Stop Shop initiative will allow people easier access to government services online or over the counter for items such as driver's licence renewal, stock permits, birth certificates and business support.
