Just a tip, don’t wear thongs to interviews

IT CRACKS me up what people think is appropriate interview attire.

I started SSC Hospitality three and a half years ago and in that time I've received nearly 2000 resumes and interviewed more than 400 hospitality staff.

I have seen it all.

One thing that stuns me is what people will wear to a job interview.

I appreciate hospitality staff aren't paid the best, but really - shorts and thongs or a Ripcurl t-shirt? C-Mon.

It's bordering on disrespectful to the company you are seeking to work for, not to go to a reasonable effort for a job.

I must say, I haven't had many females turn up and disappoint me - so well done ladies.

And I'm not just saying that because I am single.

Another thing that gets me fried up (sorry about the pun) is people not letting us know when they can't make it to an interview.

In this world we live in now where you are more likely to have a phone than you are a job-why not just call or email and say I'm not coming?

I once arranged 20 interviews and only five people bothered to turn up.

Luckily Gordon Ramsay wasn't doing the interviews that day. It's fair to say those 15 have burned their bridges. One more brief word of advice - when asked a question keep it brief and to the point.

Recently I asked someone about their work history and their response started with: "Back in 1986 I got a job working at..."

Needless to say I had finished my coffee by the time this person had finished talking and the caffeine hit had well and truly worn off.

Three tips for those of you heading to a job interview:

  1.  If you want to wear shorts and thongs - go to the beach.
  2.  Turn up.
  3.  Keep each answer to less than an hour long-unless you are getting paid by the hour at the interview.
