Jockey buoyed after Michelle Payne's ride to victory
MADDIE Lee had goosebumps as Michelle Payne rode Prince of Penzance home to victory in the Melbourne Cup this year.
The 16-year-old said seeing the female jockey take out such a male-dominated event inspired her to stick with her dream of becoming a "jockey or horse trainer" when she grows up.
"The amount of adrenaline was just breathtaking," Maddie said.
"I had goosebumps and couldn't sit still. I was way more excited than my classmates.
"It makes me more inclined to try and be a jockey. It was amazing she could do that."
After growing up on the showjumping circuit, Maddie had her first taste of horse racing this year when she competed in the Mackay Beach Races.
She said the next step in becoming a jockey would be to secure track work.
"I've also considered becoming a paramedic, but I know I could never give up horses," she said.
