Jobs board favours aussie workers

IN THE heat of public criticism for allowing mining jobs to go to foreign workers, the Federal Government has launched a national jobs board which gives preference to Australian applicants.

As part of the new Resources Sector Jobs Board, companies and contractors recruiting overseas workers through Enterprise Migration Agreements will have to prove that all qualified Australian applicants were considered first.

The board will show all related vacancies and provide recruitment advice and a registration application which allows job seekers to record their qualifications and skills which will be automatically matched with potential employers.

All positions for the Roy Hill project, the first company to be controversially given the green light to hold EMAs, will be advertised through the board in the lead up to construction.

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said the EMA program was set up so overseas workers could fill skills shortages on mega resource projects and the board would be a good indicator of where the gaps were.

He said the government understood mining companies sometimes needed temporary overseas workers to finish the job but Australian workers needed to be give priority.

He also said the EMAs included commitments from mining companies to use to the board and provide project specific training for Australians.

"We don't want to miss out on these mega projects and the new jobs they create but we are also determined to spread the benefits of the mining boom," Mr Bowen said

"Ensuring Australians are given first crack at resources jobs is a major part of that commitment."
