Jetstar flight grounded after smoke fills cabin

A JETSTAR flight, which was en route to Cairns from Sydney, had to be diverted to Brisbane this evening after smoke filled the cabin. 

The Courier Mail reports witnesses on board the flight said many passengers were forced to cover their faces to avoid breathing in the smoke. 

One witness said the smoke followed a scraping or grating noise and an engine was reportedly switched off mid-flight. 

A Jetstar spokesman confirmed the incident and it's understood arrangements are currently being made for passengers to continue their journey to Cairns.

"A flight from Sydney to Cairns was diverted to Brisbane this evening after the aircraft encountered a technical issue with one of its engines," a statement from the airline read.

"The aircraft had a normal landing in Brisbane where it will be inspected by engineers to understand the cause of the issue.

"We apologise to our customers for this disruption and we making arrangements for our passengers to continue their journey to Cairns as soon as possible."
