Jets to name new captain next week to make 'right decision'

THE Ipswich Jets will remain without a captain for a few more days.

Speculation surrounding who will take over the mantle left by outgoing captain Keiron Lander will continue until Tuesday when the club name their official side for the 2016 season.

It was expected the new captain would be announced at the Jets season launch tonight but Jets chairman Steve Johnson said the decision was one which could not be rushed.

"To replace a leader like Lander isn't a decision that can be taken lightly," Johnson said.

"We've been having those discussions since midway through last year when Keiron told us of his decision to move on.

"Unfortunately that time hasn't passed."

A veteran of the green and white, Lander guided the Jets both on and off the field, leaving big shoes to fill for any potential candidate.

Johnson said the right captain would need to possess some of the qualities that made Lander such an inspiration for the Jets in recent years.

"It's the most difficult decision we have had to make in the last five years," he said.

"We do have several outstanding candidates but it's about getting that right person.

"With Lander we knew the man inside that young lad, and he certainly came out and turned into one of the best in the game at any level.

"He embraced that culture of leadership and mateship."
