Jets number nine set to shine at Bishop Park

HE might be sporting a new look, but Chris Ash is still the same hard-working player for the Ipswich Jets.

With the return of Luke Capewell, Ash has taken a new role as hooker for the Jets this season. Still given plenty of opportunity to get his hands on the ball, the Ipswich school-teacher scored his first Intrust Super Cup try in the Jets first round win over Tweed Heads.

"Chris has been pretty important to the Jets over the last 12 months,” Ipswich Jets co-coach Ben Walker said. "He always does a great job for us and he's a very versatile player.

"He plays anywhere we need him and is one of those guys who has really improved. To see him playing first grade for Ipswich is terrific.”

With one win and a loss from the opening two rounds, Walker has been impressed with the club's efforts.

After pushing the Townsville Blackhawks all the way in their first home game last weekend, the Jets co-coach said there was plenty to look forward to in the season ahead.

"We're all very excited around the club,” he said. "The feeling is really positive at the moment and the staff have started to pick up on that.

"In the two games we've had we have played exceptionally well in the first and probably played to 75 per cent of our ability in the second against the Blackhawks.

"If we had lost and played badly we would be concerned but to play that well and lose is a great start.”

The Jets have lost two key players ahead of tomorrow's clash with Norths Devils at Bishop Park.

Ono So'Oialo and Nathan Goulton will replace the injured Jesse Roberts and Richard Pandia.

Roberts faces a six week stint on the sidelines after injuring his collarbone, while Pandia is set to miss two weeks after dislocating his finger against the Blackhawks.
