Jarryd Hayne backlash begins with call for his axing

A LEADING American sportswriter has suggested the San Francisco 49ers should part company with Jarryd Hayne.

The bubble has burst for the Hayne train, with the former Aussie league star failing to impress in a battling 49ers team.

Sports Illustrated NFL pundit Peter King has written the signing of Hayne was "fun while it lasted" in his regular Monday Morning Quarterback column.

His fumbles were putting the 49ers under pressure and he also criticised his blocking ability.

""For the second time in the first six weeks of the season, Hayne fumbled a punt," King wrote after the 49ers narrow win over Baltimore.

"The 49ers are not good enough to hand away potential possessions once every three games because they like the former Australian Rugby League player's potential."

Hayne has battled to kick on from his promising pre-season form and a couple of fumbles have highlighted his inexperience.King doubted Hayne was good enough to retain his punt returner position, let alone make an NFL career in the offence.

Hayne's pre-season promise drew huge attention in Australasia but that has subsided as the realities of a code switch to an elite level of American professional sport sunk in.
