Jamie gets a roasting for overcooked chicken on MasterChef

THERE'S only one thing worse than undercooked chicken on MasterChef - overcooked chicken.

That's what Jamie Ward served to MasterChef judge George Calombaris and it sent him home.

In tonight's "battle of the blokes" Jamie, Matthew Hopcraft and Stephen Rooney were thrown a curveball when there was no guest chef present for the pressure test.

Instead, they were asked to reinvent roast chicken as a fine-dining dish.

The judges told them to keep a sense of comfort food while giving chicken a MasterChef twist.

Half an hour into the two-hour cook, Jamie had to abandon his plan to finely butcher his chicken and instead make a parsley-stuffed roulade.

But his dish wasn't nearly as refined as Matthew's roulade, which featured the best sauce of the night.

The line-ball decision came down to George after Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan were split between Jamie and Steven.

George's piece of overcooked chicken pushed Jamie out the door.

Working towards his long-term goal of opening his own artisan sandwich business, Jamie has been working at a pop-up restaurant in Melbourne.

The 30-year-old is also developing a range of healthy snacks to launch later this year.

"This food dream is absolutely real and I know I've got what it takes to make it happen," he said.

"I've got huger for this industry and I need to keep up the momentum with the cooking and chase every opportunity that comes."

MasterChef airs Sundays through Thursdays at 7.30pm on Channel 10.
