AN ORDINARY trip to the shops became something much more momentous for a Svensson Heights couple yesterday.

Ruth Wilson and Bernie Hinton were strolling through Sugarland when they stopped to window shop at jewellery store Wallace Bishop.

"Bernie said to me 'Oh, that's a nice ring,'" Ruth said. "It was a big one - he said 'That's a rock'."

It was a beautiful emerald and diamond ring, but not one for any fuss, Ruth said: "Oh no, I don't want anything like that".

"We tried it on as a dress ring at first because I'm a bit embarrassed about this sort of stuff," she said.

She slipped it on her right ring finger - and it nearly got stuck.

But Bernie suggested that perhaps it was on the wrong hand.

Toni Lynch served the pair and said Ruth began to tear up.

"I gave it to Bernie and said to him 'Would you like to put it on?' and he got down on one knee and proposed in front of us," she said.

"She was bawling and we congratulated them - I rang the manager and got him to bring some tissues up.

"Ruth told Bernie 'We're too old for this' and Bernie said 'We're never too old'.

"It doesn't happen every day - it made my day."

Bernie said the proposal had been a spontaneous move.

"It was all very sudden," said Ruth.

"We've been together seven or eight months.

"We're both 77. At our age, if you want to be together, you can't waste time."

The couple had kept the news to themselves yesterday afternoon.

"Nobody knows about this, not even my kids, or the grandkids," Ruth said.

And as for the ring finger on her left hand?

"It fits perfectly," she said.

"It's where it's supposed to be."
