'This isn't your country': Man racially abused at plaza
A TOOWOOMBA man who was on the receiving end of a public racist attack had the final say.
Paul Aleer was publicly abused by a man on Friday afternoon at Toowoomba Plaza.
"You don't belong here, go back to your country," the man said to him.
Mr Aleer at first ignored the shameful remark and thought he misheard him.
The man then continued with a tirade of racial abuse.
He called Mr Aleer a "scrub" and said: "this isn't your country, go back you black c***".
However, it Mr Aleer who had the last say.
He responded: "Mate, I've been here for 14 years and in that time I have treated Australia with the utmost respect."
"I became a citizen and (am) currently studying at university, what do you do for living? Obviously nothing because you're small-minded and uneducated.
"You're the reason racism still exists today."
Mr Aleer said the man was lost for words.
"He (obviously) thought I didn't have a mouth or even knew how to speak English," he said.
After he was attacked, a woman then walked Mr Aleer to his car.
"She said 'you're welcome here and you deserve as many rights as we do in this beautiful country'," he said.
"I commended her and made sure she knew my appreciation for her kind words.
"Never in my decade and a half of living in Australia, would I have suspected that a revolting attack (would) occur in the very eyes of the public."
Mr Aleer shared his story on Facebook, which has received more than 800 likes and 80 shares.
Toowoomba residents were quick to condemn the abuser.
Martyn Ford said the man did not represent the views of the majority of Australians.
"He needs to get out of the country as it's un-Australian what he did," he said.
Joe McConnell said: "That's absolutely disgusting and I hate that people like this still exist."
"(A) huge credit to you for handling it in such a way bro, you're the man."
Lynette Geitz said: "Some people are just total idiots and like to talk up big but have no substance."
