Islamic gated community plan rejected by the council
CONTROVERSIAL plans to build an exclusive Islamic community in Brisbane have been blocked by council.
Brisbane City Council finalised the controversial Master Plan assessment submitted by the Australian International Islamic College after it was lodged in February, 2015.
However, the plans to build an exclusive gated community have been watered down after proposals to build residential and retail facilities were knocked back.
Council planning chairman Julian Simmonds said approved plans "restricted the site to education purposes", while proposals for aged care and residential living were refused.
"Just like many other independent schools, council has permitted some boarding facilities for students who live outside Brisbane," Cr Simmonds said.
