Ipswich trio pad up SEQ title campaign

IPSWICH has three debutantes in the South East Queensland team to contest the Schaeffer Shield at Toowoomba this weekend.

Captained by Central Districts all-rounder Ben O'Connell, the SEQ team includes veterans Craig Cumming and Mark Sharrad along with newcomers Rhys O'Sullivan, Luke Barrett and Travis Ilka.

"I didn't expect it but it's a good opportunity," Barrett said.

The spin-bowling all-rounder has played just two Webb Shield matches, making 14 and taking one wicket against Gold Coast on Sunday.

But he scored 103 not out in his last club game for Central Districts.

Barrett expects a definite step up in standard this weekend.

"It's definitely a good opportunity for me to keep improving," he said.

SEQ took out last year's competition.

A South Queensland team will be named on Sunday night.
