Tired driver fined after crash

A WOMAN who crashed her car into a creek after falling asleep behind the wheel has been fined.

Iglal Muhieldin Hossein, 48, was driving on Lowood-Minden Road at Minden about 8am on November 21 when she drove off the road and into a creek.

Ipswich Magistrates Court was told neighbouring residents ran to Hossein’s aid when she opened her driver’s side door but could not get out because the water was too deep. When police arrived Hossein’s Holden Barina was partially submerged in the creek about 10 metres from the road.

Hossein told police she was returning home after dropping her brother at the airport and admitted she started to feel tired.

“She had fallen asleep whilst driving,” prosecutor Senior Constable Brad Dick said.

Hossein said she had woken up to discover she was heading off the road so slammed on the brakes and pulled right on the steering wheel – but she crashed into a guard post, then into the creek.

Hossein pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention and driving an unregistered vehicle.

She was fined $300.
