Three sides make Metro Cup competition semi-finals

THE further the Metro Cup competition goes, the more Lee Addison is confident his school's rugby league program is on the right track.

Ipswich State High School (ISHS) has three teams involved in semi-finals today (year 8, 9 and open) at Waterford while Redbank Plains SHS is also involved (year10).

"It shows we're performing okay at the moment," Addison said.

"Some of the Metro teams are good enough to be in the Broncos Cup but they don't want to make the financial commitment."

Only one other school can rival the Brassall-based school for such representation (Morayfield).

As such Addison believes all three teams are well equipped to make it through to their grand finals.

"I think we're nearly full strength," Addison said of his open team.

"If you don't perform your best in semi-finals, you shouldn't be playing."

Both open and year nine sides had convincing quarter-final wins a fortnight ago, though the year eights were lucky to get through against Browns Plains High.

"The year eights didn't play well," Addison said.

"Their attitude wasn't right.

"They'd had a lot of comfortable wins so being year eights, they are learning all about life, not just football."

In contrast, the year nine team goes into its clash with Woodridge High full of confidence. "They played their best game all year," Addison said.

"Their attack just came together."

In the open division, Addison can only hope his team is prepared, knowing little about the opposition.

"To win games at this time of year, you have to do the simple things better than the opposition," he said.

It is an old cliché but for Addison that does not mean playing boring, one dimensional football.

Against an expectedly bigger Woodridge SHS team, he knows his team will benefit from throwing the ball around - so long as they do so intelligently.
