Ipswich quartet for SEQ
ALL-ROUNDER Ben O'Connell is one of four Ipswich cricketers named in the South Queensland side following the weekend's Schaeffer Cup carnival.
Paul Milne, Mark Lehmann and Kev Cumming will join captain O'Connell on the plane to Cairns as the southerners look to end North Queensland's domination of the Fourex Cup country title.
A few more Ipswich players were unlucky to miss out after strong showings across the weekend fixtures.
Tyrone De Silva batted strongly, notching 73 runs across the two games at a run-a-ball, while late call-up Nick Vellacott struggled for time in the middle due to strong top-order batting.
South Queensland selector Darryl O'Sullivan said his team had a tough time picking the representative side.
With so many strong performances, players were shuffled around all teams to make sure everyone had a chance to impress.
"We're fortunate enough that we can move people around in the line-ups," O'Sullivan said.
"When we are picking the side, it's easy to think we may have too many bats there but the batsmen picked are very good spin bowlers as well."
Spin dominated the carnival with Gold Coast leg-spinner Craig Mitchell registering an incredible six wickets for only five runs and Milne adding a five-wicket haul on day one.
With conditions at Cairns' Cazaly Stadium expected to favour seam bowlers, O'Sullivan said the selected team for next month's fixture was well balanced.
"The beauty we have got is our spinners are good top-order batsmen," O'Sullivan said.
"We're expecting a bit of a greentop in Cairns.
"The word is they've got four or five genuine quicks up there so I'd imagine it will be a bit of a seamers' deck."
Gold Coast players Sean Fitzsimmons, Craig Mitchell and Jack O'Keefe were also named from the dominant SEQ side that took all before it in the Schaeffer Shield.
