Ipswich players in Qld Country side

FIVE Ipswich players have been named in the Queensland Country men's hockey team after the annual Super League championships in Brisbane.

Kai Douglas, Chris Mantell, Aaron O'Beirne, Jay Pavitt and Mark Pocock were today picked in the side contesting the Australian Country championships in Wollongong in August.

Steve Bayliss was named a shadow player for the side which finished second at last year's championships in Toowoomba.

Both South West Queensland teams wrapped up the Super League titles with wins over Northern this morning.

The men won 3-1 with the SW Queensland women victorious 2-0 at the State Hockey Centre.

Both zone teams finished fourth after failing to make the finals.

The Lumberjacks earlier had losses to Wide Bay (2-1), Central 4-2 and Brisbane Fury 4-1. Their first win was 4-3 over South Coast.

"We are very disappointed,'' Lumberjacks coach Steve Hawthorne said.

"We picked up the pace a little bit too late. With Kris Glass coming out of the team it took us too long to adjust.''

Brisbane Fury beat Northern Storm 6-3 to secure this year's men's title.

Going into today's final game, the Lumberjills were beaten by Wide Bay (2-0), South Coast (2-1) and Brisbane Blitz (1-0).

Their first win was over Central 2-0.

Brisbane Blitz defeated Wide Bay Thunder 2-1 in the women's final.

The Queensland Country women's team was unavailable.
