Third place finish for Ipswich girls at state hockey titles

IPSWICH'S under-13 girls team finished a pleasing equal third at the state titles in Mackay yesterday.

Ipswich's number one team drew 1-1 with Gold Coast.

Gaby Nicholls continued her outstanding form converting another penalty corner.

Ipswich was unlucky not to have two deflections ruled Gold Coast own goals.

"They were right in the game,'' Ipswich Hockey regional coaching director Neil Shearer said.

"It was a good quality even game.''

Shearer praised the young team's efforts.

"They've learnt a lot and the players have improved since the start of the week,'' he said.

Nicholls, Lauren Hess and goalkeeper Emily Witheyman-Crump will back up for Ipswich's under-15 team at next week's state titles in Ipswich.

Ipswich's number two girls team finished equal fifth in Division 3 after drawing 0-0 with Cairns 3.
