Countdown on for Ipswich Cup
PREPARATIONS for Ipswich Cup Day on Saturday are rounding the final bend and entering the home straight, buoyed by a late surge of support.
Ipswich Turf Club general manager Brett Kitching said all indications were the crowd would be about the same as last year's turnout.
"We're pleased with the interest and ticket sales, and we're expecting a similar crowd to last year," Mr Kitching said.
"The surge that has happened this week in pre-sold tickets we are expecting to continue right through to Friday."
He said a number of trends in ticket sales had surfaced this year.
One, also reported by the Brisbane Racing Club during the Winter Carnival, was people waiting until the last minute to buy tickets.
Allied with that was more people booking places in the massive in-field Breezer public marquee rather than organising their own marquees.
"Yesterday, we sold 250 Breezer tickets alone," he said.
"There are fewer individual marquees in the in-field. It's probably and indication of how time-poor people are.
"We're expecting about the same number of pre-sold marquee tickets."
Also this year there has been more interest from members and the general public.
"People from all over the country are looking to join as members just so they can be in the members' area at the Ipswich Cup," he said.
"This week there were five requests from BRC members to see if they have reciprocal members' rights. On Monday I had a call from someone in Tasmania."
Ipswich Turf Club is banking on its run of fine Cup days to continue. The forecast indicates that and yesterday, gentle sun and wind was slowly but surely drying the track after recent rain.
General admission tickets are available from the Ipswich Turf Club office on 3282 1500.
Tickets are $20 if pre-purchased before Ipswich Cup Day or $25 at the gate on cup day.
