Ipswich contingent flying flag for Queensland women

THIS weekend in the NRL is designated Women in League round with several sides holding functions to show what a huge part females play within their club.

Female participation in rugby league is also at an all-time high with numbers in both states getting bigger every year.

The sport has made TV over the past few years and this will continue on Sunday at 11.30am on Fox with the annual Origin Women's match between Queensland and NSW taking place.

NSW won the Nellie Doherty Cup for the first time last year breaking the incredible 17 year reign of the Maroons.

Ipswich will be well represented with local players Ali Brigginshaw, Kody House, Amelia Kuk and Brittany Breayley all donning the Queensland jersey with hopes of wrestling back the Cup.

Federer the greatest

SOCCER had Pele, golf had Nicholas, basketball had Jordan, boxing had Ali and ice hockey had Gretzky.

You can add Roger Federer to tennis.

He is the greatest tennis player we have witnessed with his story only getting bigger with his eighth Wimbledon victory.

Federer took six months off to rest his body, missing the entire clay court season.

Many judges were predicting the decline of the great man. How wrong they were with Federer in arguably the best form of his career.

He started in round one with a straight sets victory and it continued all the way through to the final with Federer not losing a set for the entire tournament.

Federer is not only a wizard with the tennis racket but he is one of the most popular sportsmen in the world.

In my mind, he's the greatest athlete I have witnessed.

Ipswich Rd 16 review

FASSIFERN v Goodna: This was billed as the grand final preview but didn't live up to the tag with a superb home game performance by the Bombers.

The heavy rain may have affected Goodna's performance. I am sure they will put this thumping behind them in the run to the finals.

Swifts v Brothers: Brothers were in complete control of this game for a long period but the never-say-die Bluebirds just kept giving. In the end, they ran the Brethren down to win this contest and continue their good form.

Cobras v Norths: A major upset was on the cards when the Cobras exploded out of the blocks. But the experienced Norths leaders settled the ship to power home and keep the Tigers in the top two hunt.

Quick thoughts

HERO of the week: Mick Fanning. He returned to J Bay, the beach where he was famously attacked by a shark to perform admirably, making it to the quarters.

Villians of the week: Connor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. Yes most people are waiting to watch the fight but the gutter talk and disrespectful commentary from both fighters is completely disgraceful.

Bomber's best: I hope you all collected on the Hurricanes who beat the undefeated Crusaders.

This week, the streak continues with the Roosters, Sharks and Panthers all winning in a three-way multi.

Who am I?

I was one half of undoubted the best halves combination in the IRL in 1957. I helped lead my club to grand final glory, scoring a try which was set up by my halfback partner in crime.

Last week's answer: Cliff Langer.
