Ipswich boxer secures important TKO victory

DEMSEY McKean showed that a 12 month injury lay-off has not dulled his speed and power.

McKean stepped back into the ring after a long break to defeat tough Russian Victor Oganov by TKO in round 6.

The victory lifted the Tower of Terror's record to a perfect 12-0.

Demsey will now put his belt on the line in his next fight in November at Southport against Roger Izonritei.

McKean will improve from his first fight back in the ring and it will take a great opponent to go anywhere close to defeating him.

Kiwis set challenge for Aussies

TRANS Tasman rivalry was on show last weekend with Australia facing our foe from across the ditch in rugby league and netball.

Australia went into these clashes as strong favourites but the bookmakers got it horribly wrong on both fronts.

The new Kangaroos team looked out of sorts.

When the chips were down in the past up stepped Smith, Thurston or Cronk but those days are gone.

The Kangaroos must now look to different experienced players to pull us back into games.

If Saturday night's loss wasn't enough, on Sunday we had to endure more punishment as the Silver Ferns defeated us comprehensively to keep the Constellation Cup alive.

On a brighter note the Bullets defeated the New Zealand Breakers last Thursday night to begin the NBL season with a win.

Quick thoughts

HERO of the week 1: While our batsmen have stuttered along in the two Tests so far, Nathan Lyon has been a bright light, taking his 314th wicket and moving to fourth all-time.

Villain of the week: The FFA for shutting the door on our city's A-League bid. General manager Pat Boyle is a great operator and I am sure the door will reopen in the future.

Did you know? South African Morne Morkel holds the record for most wickets off no balls. He has taken 14 wickets.

Bomber's best: The Everest was a great race with my two tips finishing sixth and seventh behind classy winner Redzel.

The A-League starts on Friday night and I see the Victory winning the battle of Victoria against rivals City this weekend.
