BUYING property in one of six Ipswich suburbs could work out cheaper than paying rent, according to property information specialists RP Data.

The company's latest Buy v Rent report indicates units are, on average, more affordable to purchase than rent.

Lower home values and tight rental markets have combined to make now an ideal time for tenants in these suburbs to become home owners, RP Data national research director Tim Lawless said.

Flinders View units valued at $114,988 were ranked as the best option to buy rather than rent within 80km of Brisbane.

RealWay Property Consultants Ipswich principal Karen Bagenal said Flinders View properties were generally affordable and desirable.

"Flinders View is a nice area, it wasn't flood affected and it's in a high growth area," Ms Bagenal said.

"At the moment rent's going up and interest rates are low. When people compare renting and buying they're finding there's not a lot of difference."

However, REIQ Ipswich zone Chair Darren Boettcher said units were rare in Flinders View.

"I think that Flinders View result might be an anomaly, but I know of many tenants who might have been paying around $300 a week in rent and have seen a property that might work out to something similar in (mortgage) payments and gone for that," Mr Boettcher said.

"That was quite common, especially when the first home buyers' grant was high."

Ms Bagenal said young people were reluctant to spend money on rent that they could otherwise spend on buying their home.

"It's a definite buyer's market, and when the right home is out there a lot of people are interested," she said.

"Everything has a cycle, though, and when it becomes a seller's market tenants won't have the same opportunity."
