Ipswich on brink of flood disaster
IPSWICH is on emergency alert, with river levels expected to surge to 22 metres today – higher than levels recorded in the devastating 1974 floods.
Thousands of residents in low-lying suburbs fled their homes and flocked to evacuation centres as the Bremer River rose quickly yesterday.
Today's flood peaks are expected to affect about one-third of the city, with “devastating” impacts predicted. There are fears dozens of people missing in areas west of Ipswich could join the flood's death toll.
Residents are being urged to listen to news broadcasts and the advice of Emergency Services.
