Airlie Beach evacuation on hold

AIRLIE Beach has already dealt with crashing waves, overturned boats and damaged resorts once this week and yesterday the tourist hot-spot was busy preparing again.

While the Whitsunday Coast region remains on tenterhooks, a small breath of relief was exhaled yesterday after the threat from Yasi potentially lessened with it tracking closer to Cairns.

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Mike Brunker said some major evacuation plans would now not take place, including the evacuation of the main strip which was considered.

“We are certainly keeping a close eye on the tracking, how

ever, because as we know cyclones are unpredictable. I must urge that people should not become complacent,” he said.”
