International veterans rise for Phoenix

TWO veterans of the international game, Costa Rican Carlos Hernandez and Belgian Stein Huysegems, combined to help Wellington record an entertaining 3-2 victory over the Jets at Hunter Stadium yesterday.

Hernandez (pictured) scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute with a great strike.

And then, after the Jets levelled when Craig Goodwin scored the first of his brace, it was Huysegems's turn to score in the 33rd minute, producing a beautiful left-foot finish after Hernandez put him into space.

The Jets refused to die, however, Goodwin getting his second one minute into the second stanza - an impressive right-foot strike following a jinking run.

But, arguably the best goal of the afternoon was the winner, going to Phoenix young gun Jason Hicks in the 71st minute.

Hernandez produced the assist, before Hicks twice dropped his shoulder and fired his missile home.
