Rally to rev up region

THE Mary Valley is set for a welcome economic boost this weekend as the International Rally of Queensland roars into town.

For a community reeling after the temporary loss of the Mary Valley Rattler the influx of visitors on Saturday and Sunday will be a welcome boost according to Gympie Regional Council Mayor Ron Dyne.

"The Gympie region welcomes high profile sporting events such as this to our region," Cr Dyne said.

"They bring new revenue in the form of visitor dollars and also showcase the beauty of our natural environment to the world.

"Council has been working with International Rally of Queensland organisers to help provide some regional promotion for the high profile event and looks forward to hosting drivers, spectators and visitors at Imbil."

Along with all the high-octane action in the state forest the event has enlisted the help of the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club.

The prized vehicles will be on display at Imbil on Sunday during the International Rally of Queensland.

"The addition of a classic car display is an innovation for 2013 and follows our aim to make the rally a weekend outing everyone can enjoy," event director Errol Bailey said.

"The members are an enthusiastic group and I'm looking forward to seeing some of their beautiful cars on display at Kenilworth and Imbil."

The public will be able to see the classic cars at the Kenilworth Showgrounds, between 10am and 11am on Sunday.

The cars will then drive to rally headquarters at Imbil where they will be on display from midday in the main street, adjacent to the popular weekly markets.

Mr Bailey said the International Rally of Queensland had organised its schedule to take cars for competition or stopovers to several locations as a way to publicise the scenic attractions.
