‘Insane’: Queensland woman wins $40m

One lucky Queenslander is $40 million richer after taking out the Powerball prize Thursday night, becoming the game's 10th division one winner for 2020.

After three weeks of the jackpot building up, Powerball reached a massive $40 million for Thursday night's draw.

The winning numbers: 27, 7, 31, 32, 2, 9, 15, and the Powerball 7, were all on the one ticket in Queensland.

A Brisbane woman had woken Thursday morning with a "funny feeling" she'd win and told lottery officials "I made sure I kept my phone on charge and that I would be ready to answer your phone call" when they rang to confirm the news, per Nine.

"My heart is about to beat through my chest," the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said while breaking into tears.

"You have no idea what this means to me. It's a dream come true.

"I am feeling so breathless. I think I might faint or throw up. This is insane."

The woman, from the suburb of Taringa, plans to quit her job after purchasing the winning ticket online.

"It's been such a tough time. This is a huge relief," she said.

"I am going to get a house and I want to share it with my family.

"I will also help some of my friends that have done so much for me.

"I am going to retire too and then I will spend my time travelling around Australia, instead of working. What can't I do?"

The $40 million jackpot has been building up for three weeks.

The Lott spokesperson Ally Ramsamy said if one person scored division one on Thursday night, they would be the only Powerball winner of 2020 to win a prize of this size.

"This week's $40 million Powerball draw is the largest jackpot currently offered by an Australian lottery game," she said.

Punters chose their favourite seven numbers and a Powerball number ahead of the draw on Thursday night.

There are nine prize divisions in Powerball. You can win a prize with as little as two winning numbers plus the Powerball number in a single game.

To win the division one jackpot, your entry needs to match all seven winning numbers plus the Powerball number in a single game.

BIG POWERBALL WINS IN 2020

With Thursday night's draw, 10 Aussies have become Powerball division one winners, collectively taking home more than $400 million in prize money.

Ms Ramsamy from The Lott said it's only the fourth time this year that Powerball has offered a $40 million jackpot.

"In the three previous draws, no one took home the $40 million prize, and instead the jackpot soared higher for the following weeks' draws," she said.

The last $40 million Powerball winner was also in Qld.

"The last time someone scored a $40 million Powerball prize was in November last year, when a Cairns healthcare worker admitted all he could think of to celebrate the life-changing revelation was to take a shower!

"If one person scores the $40 million prize on Thursday, they too could be contemplating how to celebrate becoming a multi-millionaire," Ms Ramsamy said.

HOW TO WIN MILLIONS

Ms Ramsamy said she had two tips for anyone keen for the chance to become one of Powerball's exclusive winners.

"If you want a chance to become an overnight multi-millionaire, then you do need to purchase an entry before the draw closes, so we recommend getting in early to avoid missing out," she explained.

"We also recommend you register your entry to a player card. If your numbers are drawn, you'll want to know you're a multi-millionaire as soon as possible. By registering your entry, your prize is secure, and we can contact you with the winning news straight after the draw."

Tickets can be purchased at any licensed lottery outlet, online from thelott.com or via The Lott mobile app.

DIVISION ONE WINS

The Lott's division one winning tally across all Australian lottery games has now reached 312 so far this financial year.

Last financial year, more than 105 million winners took home more than $3.45 billion in prize money from their favourite games at The Lott, including Saturday Lotto, Monday and Wednesday Lotto, Powerball, Oz Lotto, Set for Life, Lucky Lotteries, Keno, Super 66, Lotto Strike and Instant Scratch-Its.

In the 12 months to June 30, 2020, Australia's Official Lotteries contributed more than $1.4 billion via state lottery taxes and donations to help community initiatives, such as hospitals, health research, disaster relief and education.
