Inquest: Sydney siege gunman's bail to be investigated

NSW coroner Michael Barnes has ruled he will investigate why Sydney siege gunman Man Haron Monis was granted bail on accessory to murder and sexual assault charges before the tragedy.

The NSW Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) applied to have the bail matter excluded and argued the issue was "too wide".

The families of siege victims Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson argued the matter was in the public interest and they have questions about why bail was granted to Monis before the siege that led to the pair's deaths.

The inquest has heard Monis was on bail for serious charges of being an accessory to the murder of his wife and 43 sexual and indecent assault charges.

A spokeswoman for the DPP said there was no confirmation as to whether there would be an appeal against the coroner's decision.
