A vote is being taken tonight by Nambucca Shire councillors to change the name of the current Pacific Hwy to Giinagay Way once the Warrell Creek to Urunga upgrade is completed.

Indigenous name suggested for 'old' Pacific Hwy

THE existing Pacific Hwy might be given a significant indigenous moniker once the Warrell Creek to Urunga upgrade is completed.

At tonight's meeting, Nambucca Shire councillors will vote on adopting the name Giinagay Way for the old highway - Giinagay being the hello/welcome greeting in the local Gumbaynggirr language.

Given the highway winds its way through both the Bellingen and Nambucca shires, the name would have to be endorsed by both councils.

Preliminary advice from Bellingen Shire Council representatives is that Giinagay Way would likely be acceptable.

In a report tabled by Nambucca Shire Council general manager Michael Coulter, gaining approval for the name from the Geographical Names Board was another hurdle to be jumped.

Consideration was given to the name Nambucca Valley Way, but the GNB objected to this due to the road including a second local government area.

As a consequence of the objection, there were further discussions with Bellingen Shire Council representatives.

A new preferred name of Rivers Way was referred to the GNB for preliminary comment.

But the GNB advised Rivers Way would be objected to due to duplication, as there was already a River St located within the Nambucca local government area, as well as a River Pl and River St within the Bellingen region.

Mr Coulter denied there was any discussion about the possibility of renaming the stretch of road Phillip Hughes Way, but he did say an appropriate memorial in Macksville would be created.
