Local man charged over 2007 assault in Perth

AN Ipswich man has been charged over the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Perth.

The 43-year-old had a brief connection with an Ipswich sporting club, but resigned when the charges came to light several weeks ago.

He is accused of following and grabbing a then-52-year-old woman from behind as she was walking on a bicycle path in the northern Perth suburb of Ocean Reef in July, 2007.

According to police, the victim broke free of the alleged attacker after she bit the accused man.

The WA State Crime Operations Team laid charges recently after reviewing investigations into the historic incident.

The man was charged with on count of aggravated sexual penetration without consent.

He appeared in Perth Magistrates Court earlier this month and was granted bail.

He is scheduled to appear in the same court again on July 17.
