IGS title bid on target

IPSWICH Grammar School's First V basketball team produced a remarkable come from behind victory on Saturday against a strong Nudgee College outfit.

At one stage, IGS trailed 32-15 early in the second quarter. The team fought back hard eventually coming out on top 81-73.

"The team showed so much character on the weekend," coach Michael Wellings said.

"Most teams would give up when they are down by that many. This team doesn't know how to give up."

For the duration of the match, the "big three " of Matineng Leahy, Kane Bishop and Alec Godinet struggled with foul trouble.

Year 11 starting power forward Lauchlan Campbell put his hand up to fill the void.

The Gladstone product scored 19 points and added 12 rebounds in a courageous effort to keep his team's premiership hopes alive.

"This was an amazing win to be a part of, to come from 17 down and end up winning is a great achievement," Campbell said.

He was ably assisted by "sixth man" Matthew Roetteler, starting point guard Verle Williams and bench guard Trav Waters who did their best to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

With only two games remaining, both players and coaches are not getting ahead of themselves.

"Both BBC and Churchie are tough games," assistant coach Mike Murray said.

"Every training session is important, we just need to keep working hard and the results will take care of themselves."

On Saturday, the team travels to Brisbane Boys College, who are also still in contention for the elusive GPS premiership.
