Basketball hotshots complete outstanding GPS season
IPSWICH Grammar School's First V basketball team completed their undefeated season on Saturday with a comprehensive 106-59 victory over Nudgee College.
The win was part of the premiership celebrations, with each player hitting the floor and all senior players scoring a basket.
"They were clinical on Saturday," coach Mike Wellings said. "It was great that all the senior boys got a good run and contributed on the scoreboard."
The regular stars did the damage early with captain Matineng Leahy, his assistants Verle Williams and Brody Baeumler racking up easy points.
Ben Kemp, Hayden Randall and Alistair Snow shared the majority of the rebounds.
However, it was again left to the bench to finish the job, which they did in style. Daniel David was particularly potent scoring 19 points. The coaches praised all the bench players.
"It isn't easy coming in cold," assistant coach James Legan said. "These guys come in every day for training and put in the work. It is great they got some court time the last couple of weeks."
After five years in the program, Ipswich Grammar's victory was a fitting farewell for Leahy. The IGS captain looks to continue his basketball career in the USA on a college scholarship.
"I'm thrilled to be a part of such an historic moment for the school," Leahy said.
"We are not quite finished yet. We still have a state championships to defend."
The team prepares for their state championship title beginning tomorrow.
The team will also have a special premiership awards dinner in the fourth term along with a day at Dreamworld.
"It is a long season," Wellings said. "By the end of this tournament everyone would have earned a well-deserved break and time to reflect and celebrate the team's wonderful achievements."
