IGS overcome rivals to hold top three GPS spot

THE Ipswich Grammar 1st XI bounced back from a disappointing loss with a solid 3-2 win over Brisbane Boys College.

The win kept IGS in the top three of this year's GPS football competition.

The match was marked as the Heritage round, in celebration of Ipswich's 150 years of schooling.

There has been a long and fierce competition between to the two schools over many years.

Both have excellent footballing programs and have played some tough encounters.

As the players and officials gathered for a pre-game luncheon with the past captains of IGS, it was clear how much the match meant.

A double from Joe Duckworth gave IGS an early lead.

However, a lapse in concentration allowed BBC back into the match just moments before half time.

The second half was much like the first with the young BBC midfield battling hard.

However this time IGS was creating the better chances and it seemed only a matter of time before they would find the back of the net.

It was Tom Webster who put his name on the scoresheet as he showed great strength to beat a couple of BBC defenders and put the ball past the goalkeeper with a well-placed shot in the bottom corner.

IGS seemed in control and should have finished one of the many chances they had created to put the game beyond doubt.

Instead a lack of urgency at the back saw BBC invited back into the game with a well finished goal.

IGS finished the game the strongest to ensure they received all three points.

One round of the GPS season remains where IGS will celebrate their 'Think Pink' when they host Anglican Church Grammar School.
