Police powerless to put a stop to F-word campervan

POLICE can do nothing to stop a camper hire company from emblazoning the F-word on the side of their hire vehicles.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey's office has also revealed police have no powers to stop camper hire company, Wicked Campers, from offering discounts to those who "smoke weed".

This is despite a request from the Advertising Standards Board to the Minister's office in March, calling on him to act after the Brisbane-based business ignored its ruling.

The revelation came after a Sunshine Coast dad complained about a Wicked camper van which was parked at King's Beach play area.

It had "F*** Google, ask me" painted in bold on its back.

The dad, who asked to remain anonymous, tried to contact Wicked to complain about their use of bad language on its van.

"I'm pretty tolerant, but this was parked right between the kids' fountain and playground," the dad said.

He said Wicked's response was, "Well, we didn't ask for the van to be parked there".

The board has had 39 complaints against Wicked registered since 2008.

In February, it ruled Wicked's use of an online discount for those who "smoke weed" portrayed "material which is contrary to prevailing community standards on safe driving".

It wrote to Mr Dempsey in March, asking him to act on the matter. The discount was still available online yesterday along with a discount for gay people.

The board said yesterday it was waiting for a response from the police minister.

But the minister's office said this had been sent "a week ago" advising it did not have the powers to act. Wicked has not replied to the Daily's requests for comment.
