Hundreds line mall to greet Santa

SANTA Claus arrived in the Ipswich Mall last night and was greeted by hundreds of children.

His mode of transport was far from the traditional sleigh - a 1911 Model T Ford - but he didn't forget to bring a gift for every child.

Ipswich Events Corporation Chairman Paul Casos said Santa received a fantastic welcome. "That's the greatest thing about this time of year. It was great to see all the smiles on their faces after a tough year for Ipswich," he said.

Mayor Paul Pisasale capped the night off by flicking on the Christmas lights, which dazzled the crowd.

Mr Casos said the animated shopfronts provided by David Paulson captured the children's attention. "I was standing there watching all the children enjoying all the puppets. I was delighted he and his company brought them to Ipswich," he said.

Earlier in the night the crowd were treated to the Christmas carols performed by the A Star is Born entrants.
